Bowers Museum Education In the Classroom
The Bowers Museum Volunteer Docents Guild members give free one-hour classroom presentations to Orange County Schools. The programs enhance school curriculum with hands-on activities, museum artifacts, photographs and/or slides that capture an era or special environment.

Available Classroom Programs:

Grades 6
Information about the customs and art for the afterlife though artifact replicas and hand-on experiences. Learn how the ancient Egyptians mummified bodies, prepared for and performed funerals.

Grades 3-4
Learn about the lifestyle, dress, tools, homes, hunting, trade, arts and crafts of the first Southern Californians through artifacts, photographs and hands-on articles.

Grades 3
Explore the colorful and diverse history of the people who settled the west coast and Orange County. Learn about the Indians, the Mission and Rancho Periods, the Gold Rush, the Railroad Era to modern times. (good for Calif. History)

Grades 4
Learn about the people who came to work in the gold mining during the California Gold Rush of 1849 through the 1850s. Slides, artifacts and hands-on articles help students to get a real feel for the period.

All Grade Levels
Discover how masks are used for disguise, protection, adornment, entertainment and ceremonies in cultures around the world. Learn through slides, artifacts and collection of many masks.

Grades 3-5
Explore the animals and plants found in Orange County tide pools. Learn how the Southern California Indians used these coastal riches as a source of food, tools and decoration.

Grades 5
This presentation covers the Indians of the Four Corners area of the American Southwest and is tied to environmental factors. It illustrates the continuing thread of artistic styles and functions of baskets, pottery, jewelry and more, from traditional days through decades of culture contact with the "white man."
